Homes can achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification by participating in the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED for homes pilot program.

There are multiple benefits of a LEED home, including lower energy and water bills; reduced greenhouse gas emissions; and less exposure to mold, mildew and other indoor toxins.

In the past it has been argued that green buildings are more expensive to build, but in recent years it has become a standard to build more environmentally friendly and energy efficient homes. Therefore, adopting green building strategies has become more cost effective.
